About Kathryn Au
Dr. Kathryn Hu-Pei Au is an award-winning literacy researcher and educator. Au has been an inducted member of the Reading Hall of Fame since 1999. She earned her M.A. in Psychology from the University of Hawaii. Her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology was earned from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign.
Through the Kamehameha Elementary Education Program (KEEP), Au served as a researcher, curriculum developer, teacher educator, and a classroom teacher for grades K-2 over a period of 23 years. She also became a Professor in the College of Education at the University of Hawaii in Manoa in 1995. |
Au is the Chief Executive Officer of SchoolRise, a system aimed to helping students grades K-12 improve their literacy and overall academic performance. She and Dr. Taffy E. Raphael founded the company in 2005. |

In 1997-1998 Au organized Hawaii's first International Reading Association (IRA) state conference as the President of the IRA Aloha State Council. From 1998 to 2001, she served as a member of the IRA Board of Directors. Au was elected as President of the IRA Council from 2009-2010.
Au served as President of the National Reading Conference (NRC) and was elected as a Vice President of the National Educational Research Association. Additionally, she has received awards, including the Oscar Causey Award for Outstanding Contributions to Reading Research presented by the NRC in 1998 and the first National Scholar Award presented by the National Association for Asian and Pacific American Association (NAAPAE).

Au's research interests lie with school literacy development, learning, and achievement for students from diverse backgrounds, both cultural and linguistic. She has notable research in culturally responsive instruction. More recent focuses have included a school change approach known as Standards-Based Change Process.
"As literacy educators, we clearly understand that reading builds on but goes beyond basic skills, that teacher expertise rather than programs alone are the key to sustained success, and that research of all varieties is needed to flesh out the picture."
